The Million Pound Spending Challenge

Could you spend one million pounds? Every penny? All at once? Here's the challenge for you!

Instructions:

The Million Pound Spending Challenge

The rules are simple:

  • You have one million pounds (£1,000,000) to spend.

  • You must spend every penny.

  • You need to be able to live for at least a year - that means somewhere to live, food to eat, electricity, water.

  • You can't put any money in the bank, you must spend it all!

Things to consider:

  • Where will you live?

  • How will you get around?

  • What will you do in your spare time?

  • What sports will you play?

  • Will you go to concerts or festivals?

  • What phone, tablet and computer system will you have?

  • What furniture will you have?

  • What bills will you have to pay? What about electricity, water, gas and council tax?

  • What food will you eat?

  • What clothes will you wear?

You need to:

  • Create a list of all the things you will buy with your million pounds. You might need to research how much things cost, like houses or cars. Talk to your family members about bills, taxes and food shopping and use this to work out how much you will need for the year.

  • Ensure you've got a total of £1,000,000 at the end.

Going a bit further? Create a mood board or scrap book page of everything you will buy to go with your list.

How you can help your child:

Tells us about it!

You can help out too! How?

  • Whilst £1,000,000 is a LOT of money, children should gain an understanding of necessary costs like bills, taxes and food. Encourage children to ask questions about the cost of living.

  • It's important to reinforce the idea that you have to be able to live for a year - so you can't just spend all the money on a house or a car.

  • For a quicker activity, or for younger children, you can use smaller quantities or come up with an agreed 'price list'.
